Introduction / History

The Mbunga people live in the Iringa Region of southern Tanzania, primarily in the Kilolo District. They speak the Mbunga language, part of the Bantu family, and also use Swahili for trade and communication. Historically, the Mbunga established small, tightly-knit villages and relied on the fertile highlands for farming, while maintaining strong clan identities and oral traditions.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Mbunga people practice subsistence farming by cultivating maize, beans, bananas, and various vegetables. They also raise goats and chickens for food and income. Extended families live together in compounds that foster shared labor and mutual support. Villagers actively participate in community events, which include celebrations, traditional dances, and seasonal harvest rituals.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Historically, the Mbunga followed animist practices, honoring ancestral spirits and local deities who influence health and harvests. Many Mbunga have now embraced Christianity, particularly Roman Catholicism and Protestant denominations, yet syncretism with traditional customs remains common. Believers need clear teaching on the sufficiency of Christ and the authority of Scripture.

What Are Their Needs?

Mbunga communities need better access to healthcare, clean water, and educational resources. Spiritually, they require discipleship that helps believers move from mixed practices to a pure, Christ-centered faith. Training of local leaders, access to Scripture in their language, and encouragement in evangelism are vital.

Prayer Items

Pray that Mbunga people encounter Jesus personally and embrace the full gospel.
Ask God to raise leaders who can faithfully disciple Muslims.
Pray for unity among Mbunga believers to boldly share Christ with neighbors.
